Buying a new vehicle should be fun. For most buyers, the sticker price is just the starting point.

Dealer fees. Surprise taxes. Costs they don’t see coming add up to thousands down at closing. But how can you protect yourself if you don’t know they exist?

    Simple.

The second you learn what they are, hidden costs don’t become a problem. Every buyer can walk into a dealership educated and prepared to drive away with no surprises. Check out how…

The Dealer Fees That Sneak Up On Buyers

Dealer fees are added on at closing. They’re miscellaneous charges that bump up the purchase price right before you sign.

Some are legit. Others? Pure gouging.

ConsumerAffairs found that about 71% of used car buyers experience at least one hidden fee when buying.

Here are a few of the most notorious ones:

    • Documentation fees
    • Dealer prep fees
    • Vehicle etching fees

What causes buyers to simply swipe their credit cards without question? These dealer fees are often buried in fine print or passed off as standard costs of doing business.

Documentation fees are used to process paperwork for the sale. Some states regulate how high they can be. Others don’t limit dealers at all. You could pay $100 at one dealership. And $700 at another for the “same” fee.

Dealer prep fees “prep” the vehicle for you. Translation: They wash the car and take off plastic wrap.

Mark-up charges like this are wildly inflated and frequently negotiable.

Bottom line? Ask questions. Demand a full list of every fee you’re charged BEFORE you agree to buy.

Taxes That Sneakily Increase The Price

Sales tax. It’s always there. But let’s be honest. When was the last time you accurately budgeted for sales tax when buying a car?

Why does this one never quite get calculated 100% correct?

    Location, location, location.

Sales tax is based on where you live. But that’s not all. State tax and local tax combine to determine your tax rate. That means dealerships located in the same state may have varying sales taxes. Why? Because their cities and counties have different tax rates.

    But it doesn’t stop there…

Once you include fees for title, registration, and licence plates you’ve got a lot of government goodies to budget for. Nobody ever avoids these charges. You must pay to play.

    Oh, what’s that?

You’re buying your car out of state?

Tax rules get tricky when you’re buying from a different state than where you live. Some states only charge sales tax where the car is purchased. Others tax you based on your home address.

Get it wrong? You could be taxed twice or penalized later.

Either way, you pay more than you planned. Always know your sales tax rates before agreeing to buy a vehicle.

Research the taxes for the state you’re buying in AND the state you live in.

Buying A Car From Out Of State? Here’s The Full Cost

Shopping outside of your home state can lead to better prices and more inventory. However, there are extra expenses that most folks fail to consider.

Think about your last out of state shopping trip.

You’ve got travel expenses to account for. Maybe inspection fees to ensure it passes muster back home. Speaking of home, there’s one big thing that trips up EVERY out of state buyer.

Did you budget for shipping costs?

Purchasing a vehicle from another state means long distance car shipping becomes part of the equation. Most shoppers don’t consider shipping when calculating total cost. That’s because prices vary drastically depending on who you ask.

A fair rule of thumb? Nationwide car shipping ranges anywhere from $500 – $1,700+. Don’t guess. Use a car transport cost calculator to get real numbers before you buy.

Need more reasons to plan ahead? Destination fees charged by manufacturers have skyrocketed in recent years.

Data from Edmunds via TheStreet shows buyers paid over $26 billion in destination fees back in 2025. Currently, the average cost now sits at around $1,600 per vehicle.

Plan for this one. Otherwise it’ll plan for you.

Costs Of Long Distance Car Shipping And Delivery

Purchasing a vehicle from out-of-state? Consider delivery costs whether you buy from a dealer or private party.

Long distance car shipping costs will vary depending on:

    • Distance to travel
    • Size and weight of your vehicle
    • Type of carrier used
    • Time of year you ship

    Let’s break these down…

As with most trips, shipping costs increase with distance. However, the price per mile typically decreases for longer routes.

Compact cars are cheaper to ship than luxury sedans or trucks. You get the idea.

Open transport is by far the most common carrier type. However, vehicles are exposed to the elements. Opting for enclosed transport can cost 50% more. Only choose this if you feel your car needs it.

Lastly, summer and snowbird season are peak shipping times. That means increased rates due to high demand.

Compare quotes from at least three companies before choosing who ships your vehicle.

And make sure they play by the rules. Verify company history, reviews, and insurance coverage.

How To Guard Your Budget Upfront

The easiest way to combat stealth car buying costs? Know them before you start shopping.

By being prepared with a budget that accounts for more than just the sticker price, you’ll get to the drive-away price quicker.

    Here’s what to do:

    1. Get an itemised out the door quote BEFORE negotiations begin
    2. Figure out tax rates at purchase location and home location
    3. Add title and registration fees to the budget
    4. Get long distance shipping quotes (if buying from out of state)
    5. Account for your new insurance premiums (they begin the day you buy!)

    There you have it.

If you only consider the vehicle price, you’ll likely get “hit” with dealer fees, extra taxes, shipping costs, and registration expenses later. These can quickly push your total 10% higher than expected.

    And that’s bad budgeting.

Final Thoughts On Dealer Fees, Taxes, And Expenses

To save money and headaches when buying a vehicle, learn everything possible about hidden dealer fees, taxes, and overlooked expenses.

As mentioned earlier. They won’t cost you anything if you make them part of your budget.

    Here’s your review:

    1. Insist on an itemised list of fees from your dealer
    2. Know tax rates where you buy AND where you live
    3. Title, registration, and insurance costs are best accounted for upfront
    4. If buying out of state, always get free long distance shipping quotes
    5. Get multiple quotes to ensure your charges are legit

Cars are expensive enough without any surprises along the way.

    Happy car shopping!
