    The Five Best Boat Dogs

From the famous Labrador retriever to lesser-known breeds like the schipperke, we explore the best boat dogs below.

    1. Labrador Retriever

The Labrador retriever is known for being a pawfect family companion because of their gentle, easygoing temperament. However, what many people don’t realize is that their roots started in the water; they were selectively bred to aid fishermen in retrieving downed waterfowl and fish from their nets.

Their qualities today are a testament to their origin. The Lab has a physique built for swimming, with a thick, otter-like tail, powerful hindquarters, and a water-resistant, tough coat that dries up quickly. They also, unsurprisingly, have a natural love for the water. While for some breeds it’s a challenge to keep them out of the waves, for Labs, the challenge is keeping their four paws on the ground!

Labrador retrievers are also eager to please and quick to train. You’ll find that they can quickly become indispensable crew members, especially when factoring in their robust frame and endless stamina. They’ll particularly excel at retrieving dropped supplies or gear from the water.

    2. Schipperke

With their name translating to “little captain” or “little boatman” in Flemish, it’s clear that the schipperke is a breed meant for the sea. The schipperke has long been associated with barges throughout history. They were used as ratters and to guard the boats at night, and were particularly favored among captains.

The schipperke, like the Labrador retriever, still retains these qualities today. They’re a perfect companion for those after a watchdog who will happily join them on any water adventure. Their small size makes them perfect for compact spaces too, allowing them to feel at ease on even canal boats.

Just be mindful that they can be strong-willed, which often presents as stubbornness during training. They will need an owner who can be firm and commit to regular training sessions.

    3. American Water Spaniel

You’ve likely heard of cocker, springer, and cavalier spaniels, and there’s no denying they’re all great pups. However, when it comes to the water? The American water spaniel should be on your radar.

Selectively bred to retrieve downed waterfowl, the American water spaniel boasts a water-resistant coat, an adaptable, sharp nature, and a natural prowess at swimming. They’ll feel at home on a boat, as long as you can meet their high exercise and mental stimulation needs.

They also bring plenty more to the deck than just being a pawfect cruise companion. They’re happy-go-lucky, easy to train, and get along with children of all ages who can give them the respect they deserve.

    4. Bichon Frise

The bichon frise is famous for being the ultimate lap dog, which they owe to their affectionate, loving temperament, unrivaled loyalty, and soft, profuse coat.

However, not many are aware that the bichon frise actually descended from the barbet or water spaniel. While their small size means they won’t be able to help with strenuous boat tasks, they often feel at ease on a boat and will no doubt fill your journeys with love, fun antics, and plenty of tail wags.

Their coat is also considered hypoallergenic, making them a potentially good fit for those with fur allergies. However, as a word of caution, remember that no dog is truly completely hypoallergenic. Meet a bichon frise first to see whether they trigger your allergies before making one a permanent part of your crew.

    5. Portuguese Water Dog

The Portuguese water dog boasts an impressively adorable curly coat, but they aren’t all looks and no substance. Beneath that fluff is a pup who, as their name suggests, truly thrives at sea.

Developed to be an all-round fishermen’s helper, they are work-driven, muscular enough to help with strenuous boating jobs, and able to swim effortlessly in even tough currents. Their coat is also considered hypoallergenic, but again, always check if your allergies react before adopting this pup.

The Portuguese water dog needs to be given a job to feel happiest. They aren’t a boat dog for those who want to laze around in the sun, but rather for those who need a helping paw with hauling in nets, fishing, or other boat-related jobs.

Finding the Best Boat Dogs in Florida

Dogs may be “land” animals, but as our list above shows, several breeds have been selectively bred to thrive at sea and can make pawfect crewmates.

Make sure to familiarize yourself with each breed’s common personality traits and care needs. Some will be better suited to your lifestyle and circumstances than others.

Done the research and found your new forever cruise buddy? Begin your pup adoption journey in Florida today!
