What Are the Best Methods to Keep Personal Items Organised While Travelling?

Ever unzipped a suitcase in a hotel room and found total chaos?

Cables tangled round socks. A toothbrush skittering free at the bottom. And that one little thing you actually needed…lost between airport and taxi rank.

It’s the experience of almost everyone. Travel scatters your possessions between bags, pockets, security trays and hotel drawers. Lose track of the little stuff.

    The good news?

Organization while traveling is easy. Several simple systems do most of the heavy lifting for you. Spend about ten minutes before you leave…

Why Travel Gear Goes Missing So Easily

Movement is the enemy of organisation.

Every time a bag is opened, something changes. Every security line tugs things out of place. Every layover creates another opportunity to forget something on a chair.

Statistics support this as well. Despite improved tracking technology, SITA reported that 24 million bags were mishandled worldwide during 2025. International trips have the highest occurrences due to there being more connections and therefore more handling.

The objective isn’t organized packing. The objective is creating a system where everything has a home… and returns to that home.

Organising Small Electronics And Your Pen Battery

Small electronics are the most difficult things to organize. They’re small, they’re expensive, and they fall all the way to the bottom of a bag.

Take the case of a pen battery for instance. It is slim. It is light. It gets inserted into whichever pocket is closest. Three days later it shows up in the pocket of a jacket nobody wore on the flight.

The solution: assign each small gadget its own pouch and never allow it to roam freely.

Travellers who tote around minimalist kits of discreet vapes tend to stash the pen battery, charger cable and any extra parts in a soft zip case together. That way your pen battery has a safe place to live each day, the charging port won’t collect pocket lint, and nothing important gets smashed by your laptop. Also keep that case with your carry-on instead of your checked luggage. The reason why comes up in just a second.

The same logic works for the rest of your tech:

    • One pouch for charging cables and plugs
    • One pouch for personal devices and a pen battery
    • One pouch for headphones, adapters and spares

    Boring? Yes. Effective? Absolutely.

The Container Method: Everything Needs A Home

Here’s the principle behind almost every good packing system…

Loose items get lost. Contained items don’t.

One great example is packing cubes. Simply place clothes into cubes by category. Tops go in one, underwear in another, sleepwear in a third. Plus, nothing needs unpacking because you just lift each cube right into a hotel drawer.

But dressing extends to so much more than clothes. A compact pouch for pills. A snap case for papers. A rugged case for sunglasses. A dry bag for anything that might escape in a hot trunk.

If every category has a container, you stop looking. You just reach for the appropriate pouch. Packing up at the end of the trip only takes minutes instead of half an hour digging under the bed.

Pack By Category, Never By Day

Plenty of travellers pack one full outfit per day, rolled up together.

It sounds smart. It falls apart on day two.

The second you pull one bundle out, the others pile into precisely the chaos you wanted to avoid. Categories work because they never actually come into contact with reality: You only ever open the one bag you need.

Pack heavy things high and close to your back with a backpack. Next pack things you’ll need WHILE hiking in the outside pockets:

    • Passport and boarding pass
    • Phone, power bank and pen battery
    • Snacks and a water bottle
    • Medication

The Battery Rules Most Travellers Get Wrong

This part isn’t only about being tidy. It’s about safety and airline rules.

Anything with a lithium battery – smartphone, power bank, pen battery, ereader – should go in your carry-on. Extra lithium batteries and vaping devices are prohibited in checked bags outright, and you will be asked to remove them by the gate agents.

Why so strict? Because this is happening, and more frequently. FAA officials documented 89 verified battery incidents on planes during one year period alone, and there have been 648 verified incidents since 2006 of smoke, fire or intense heat.

Avoiding all of that is easier than it sounds:

    • Keep spare batteries in your carry-on, every time
    • Cover the terminals with tape or use the original packaging
    • Put each battery into its own pouch, this will prevent shorts against keys/coins
    • Never pack a damaged, swollen or recalled battery

Ok, there’s another reason why this is important. Statistics indicate the average flyer now travels with four devices on a flight. That’s four chargers, four cables and plenty of opportunity to create a massive knot. A good cable tidy up system fixes the entire issue.

Documents, Cash And The Boring Stuff

Passports/cards/paperwork deserves their own category because losing it will ruin your trip faster than anything else listed.

Keep passport, printouts of bookings & insurance in a single flat wallet. Divide up your money. Store some cards in the wallet. Keep 1 backup card in a separate place entirely – buried deep in your main bag preferably.

Take photos of everything valuable and upload them to the cloud as well. If your bag gets lost you will have what you need to file a claim.

One more awesome habit to emulate: place your name card inside your luggage, instead of the handle. Tags come off everywhere.

    The Five-Minute Reset

Here’s the habit that ties all of this together…

Take five minutes each night to tidy up. Drop cords in tech bag. Dodo batteries in case. Papers in wallet. Dirty clothes in the laundry bag.

That’s it. That’s the whole trick.

Do this every night and you’ll never have to repack everything. Even better, you’ll find out you forgot something the day you forgot it, with time to return that day.

    Bringing It All Together

Keeping personal items organised while travelling really comes down to three things:

    • Containers – every category gets its own pouch, cube or case
    • Consistency – items return to the same home every single night
    • Care with electronics – batteries stay in the cabin, protected and separate

None of this is overly complex. Some inexpensive pouches, a document wallet and five minutes every night will keep your belongings organized better than any pricey luggage.

Begin with the little things as well. Cables, chargers, pen battery. Those are the things that go missing first and once you have those accounted for, everything else behind it tends to fall in line.
