How to Get an Ontario Driver’s License
To begin, you’ll need to book an appointment online at a DriveTest Centre to complete the written driver’s test. There is a fee of $159.75 that you have to pay. You also need a valid ID that shows your birthdate, legal age, and signature, and you need to take an eye exam.
You then have to go through three driver’s license levels that consist of written exams and road tests.
G1 License
A G1 license is much like getting a beginner’s driving license or a learner’s permit. You’ll need to be 16 years of age to apply for this license.
You must learn traffic signs and road rules to pass the written G1 driving test, so it’s best to take the G1 practice test to prepare. You can get more info here about studying and taking your G1 driving test.
There are rules you have to follow when you have a G1 license that includes:
- You can only drive with another person who has a full G license with four years of experience
- No alcohol or cannabis in your system
- No driving between midnight and 5 am
- No driving on 400-series highways like Queen Elizabeth Way
- Always wear your seatbelt
- Drive a G-class vehicle which is a car or small truck
- Drive for at least 12 months before taking the G1 road test
G2 License
Having a G2 license gives you more freedom. You’ll be able to drive independently without time restrictions if you’re over 19.
To get a G2 license, you have to pass the G1 exit road test. You’ll also have to have your G2 license for at least a year before you can take the G2 exit road test.
Even though a G2 license gives you more freedom, you’ll still have some restrictions like:
- No alcohol or cannabis in your system
- You must practice for a full 12 months on Ontario roads
- All your passengers must wear their seatbelts
- Only carry passengers that can wear working seatbelts
If you’re under 19, you can only drive with one passenger between midnight and 5 am for the first six months. After six months, you can have up to three passengers between midnight and 5 am.
Full G License
A full G license is your final step in Ontario’s licensing system. With a full G license, you’ll get the most freedom as long as you keep yourself and others safe while driving.
To get your full G license, you’ll need to have your G2 for an entire year and pass the G test. Rules for a full G license include:
- You can drive only G-class vehicles meaning no motorbikes
- You can’t have a blood alcohol level over 0.08%
- Drivers under 21 need a 0% blood alcohol level
